Artist's Bio

I, Lisa Grunewald Bailey, youngest of three children, was born on March 19, 1957 and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. I started taking group drawing lessons when I was nine and by twelve years old I changed to weekly oil painting classes. I knew I wanted a career in art since the ninth grade. In my senior high school year I took a co-op job in the display department of a large department store called Jacobson's. From there I went on to college and double-majored in Art and Interior Design at Adrian College, Adrian, MI.

While I was in college, I did several commissioned works for the college and staff. I graduated with a BA in 1979 and married Daryl Bailey. My first job was in Detroit, MI at a furniture store as their staff interior designer. They relocated out of the area, so I worked as an assistant designer with a commercial interior decorating company also in Detroit, MI. During this time, I picked up several painting commissions and was a member of the artists group called the "Detroit Scarab Club".

In 1982 I had my first child. Soon after my son's birth, my husband was transferred and we moved to Olathe, Kansas. We lived there three years before a job promotion transferred him to Baltimore, Maryland. There I had our second child. Once both children were in full day school, I started painting again and selling hand-painted stationary.

In 1994, we moved to Crystal Lake, Illinois. My daughter was in third grade when I began volunteering at her school in the "Art Volunteer in the Classroom" program. This program was run in co-ordination with the "Art Institute of Chicago". I would research famous artists and then share that information with the classroom. During these visits, I used prints provided by the Art Institute. The program was designed to help children appreciate and understand all different kinds of art. I continued with this program through my daughter's fifth grade year. Then in 1998, I began teaching art to home-schooled children.

In late 1999, my family and I moved to Franklin, Massachusetts. The next year, I started my business Developing Artists, which I run out of my home. I teach group and private drawing and painting classes to children and adults. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Developing Artists I produced a month-long Student Art Exhibit at the Norfolk Public Library. In April 2010 I held the reception for that exhibit that included 122 paintings representing 48 artists of all ages. In 2008 I was a judge for the 37th Annual Regional Juried Art Exhibition held at the Marlborough Public Library. I taught art for the adult education program at King Philip Regional High School from 2001-2007. In 2007 I did a series of art workshops at the Franklin Public Library. I have also been an Artist-In-Resident at South Elementary School in Bellingham, MA, a substitute art teacher for Cornerstone Christian Academy in Franklin, MA, a judge for the Franklin Art Association's (FAA) 2002 members show and judge for the "Discover Sri Lanka" children's art contest sponsored by the Sri Lanka Association of New England.

I have been a member of the FAA since 2002 and was FAA President from 2003 - 2006. I am currently the President of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society and a member since 2006. In addition, I am a member of the Amazing Things Art Center, Attleboro Arts Museum, Blackstone Valley Art Association, Cultural Arts Alliance, Danforth Museum of Art, Foxboro Art Association, and Framingham Artists' Guild.

I continually participate in juried exhibits and have received numerous awards. I also exhibit my artwork in solo and group shows at various businesses and museums. Individuals and businesses throughout the United States have purchased my work.
